Is masturbation healthy for you?

It will be possible for us to write an entire article on the negative impacts that regular masturbation can have on you, but then again, a smoker knows what impact smoking has to their health and yet they still smoke. This article, however, is for the committed Christian, who is pursuing a life with the Lord Jesus and is maybe confused to where masturbation fits into a  committed Christian’s lifestyle. We pray that this article will help you engage the truth and set you free from the lies that might enslave you.

Masturbation can lead to sexual confusion, addiction (which can, in turn, lead to physical harm), AND it cultivates lust. Lust is never satisfied. There are few people who can watch porn without masturbating; the two are inseparable. That does not sound like something our Holy Father would be indifferent to.
God does address lust in the Bible – He is not silent about it, He is just saying things that most people do not want to hear.

“For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.” Galatians 6:8 (ESV)

As our Lord Jesus once had to bring the Pharisees attention back to the beginning of creation to silence them regarding a major sexual stumbling block called divorce in Matthew 19:1-9, we think it is fitting that we do the same.

In Genesis 1 and 2 in regards to the creation of man and woman, God gives two very important commands that guide us to where our sexuality fits into our lives. In Genesis 1:27 and 28 it is written: “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female he created them. And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” Genesis 2: 24 it is written: Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

Please take note that in these first commands that God gave man, regarding their sexuality, it did not involve any pursuit of pleasure but rather for multiplication and bonding.
If your sexuality is being used for anything other than what is mentioned in these passages you are in danger because you will not be under the blessing of God. In Genesis 1: 28 it is written “And God blessed them…” And then afterwards it is stated where His blessing will lie.

Now we would like to bring your attention to a concept called Hedonism. “Hedonism is a school of thought that argues that the pursuit of pleasure and intrinsic goods are the primary most important goals to maximize net pleasure (pleasure without pain). However upon finally gaining pleasure, happiness may remain stationary. Ethical hedonism is the idea that all people have to do everything in their power to achieve the greatest amount of pleasure possible to them. It is also the idea that every persons pleasure should far surpass their amount of pain. Ethical hedonism is said to have been stated by Aristippus of Cyrene, a student of Socrates. He held the idea that pleasure is the highest good.

Let’s compare that to Christianity:

Christianity is a religion where your first and foremost pursuit should be Gods Kingdom and His righteousness, in pursuit of Gods Kingdom and righteousness (Matthew 6:33) one is to live a life of self-control (Galatians 5:22-23), not giving in to the desires and lusts of one’s flesh (1 Corinthians 9:24-27), but putting it to death through Gods Spirit (Romans 8:13), resisting the devil (James 4:7) and go through this process called renewing your mind (Romans 12:1-2), while not conforming to the ways and practices of this world (Titus 2:12) so that you can be transformed into a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17).

Lets get a bit scientific if you are still not convinced.

With masturbation you are in control of what is pleasurable to you regarding speed, pressure and what to think about, which is not a good idea if you are married or looking to be married one day, because in doing so you are training your body and brain to what kind of pleasure it shld respond to. If you do get married then, masturbation will take the back seat for a while, because now everything is new and exciting, but for the brain that has been wired in lust and not in love, that excitement tends to die out and your brain will look for what is more pleasurable and it will take you back to where you were in control in the amount of pleasure. This however will leave you very unsatisfied and lonely once again, even if you are married to someone. This makes things very difficult for a person who does want to go through a mind renewal process because now your brain has been hi-jacked due to the unhealthy amount of dopamine and opioids your actions have produced. If you are in control of the amount of pleasure you provide yourself every time, you can maximize it and make sure you achieve the high you need every time, which is very unhealthy for the brain, because it was not created to be fed that amount of chemicals and now it starts to build up a tolerance and a dependency to these chemicals which can leave you depressed and severely unsatisfied. Compare that to a relationship where you are not in control of the amount of pleasure you give yourself and your focus is not on yourself but someone else, where love and bonding is the focus, then these chemicals are released in a healthier amount that will not cause a dependency or a tolerance but will leave you feeling very much in love, connected and satisfied.

“But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people. For among them are those who creep into households and capture weak women, burdened with sins and led astray by various passions, always learning and never able to arrive at a knowledge of the truth. Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so these men also oppose truth, men corrupted in mind and disqualified regarding the faith. But they will not get very far, for their folly will be plain to all, as was of those two men.” 2 Timothy 3:1-9 (ESV)
